Shopping for furniture can be tiring and frustrating. Typical furniture showrooms are large, and give a false idea of the size of the furniture you're looking at. Be careful to understand the terminology and measure your room and existing furniture carefully before you go shopping. If possible make a plan of your room and how you want to lay it out, then buy furniture to fit the plan, don't change the plan to fit the furniture. There are several different types of table, and some have more than one name.
The main pieces of your living room are going to be your sofa, tables and lamps. Although some people prefer to use a ceiling light or hanging lights as opposed to lamps, you may want a small lamp that serves as an additional lighting fixture as well as adding a warm atmosphere to the furnishings. For instance, a small lamp sitting on contemporary sofa tables next to a chair provide a warm inviting atmosphere in your home. Guests will automatically gravitate towards that chair. It's also a great place to kick back with a good book.
Style. One thing many shoppers forget to think about when shopping for sofa tables is the fact that it should complement the back of the sofa. Most people do not spend much time looking at the back side of their sofas, but it is certainly recommended in the case of a sofa table, especially if the back of the couch actually backs into another space like a kitchen, dining room, or entryway. The style of the sofa tables you consider should match the style of the sofa, and if there are any wood accents on the sofa, it helps to try to match the color and style of the wood. The table should also not stick out apart from the rest of the room, so try to find one that meshes very well with the furniture you already have.
If you are on a budget, you don't have to spend a fortune to have a great living room setting with a sofa table involved. Sofa tables can range in price from a hundred dollars or so to thousands of dollars. While you may like the ones that cost thousands, you may have to make due with a couple hundred-dollar budget. Here's how to make it work.
Console tables are another version of the modern sofa tables you see in many homes. These are perfect for the home that isn't perfectly square. If you have any nooks or crannies that you don't know what to do with, a console table will perfectly fill up that space. Put a live plant or statue on top and you have the perfect addition to your great room.
The height of the table is crucial as it should not be higher than the back of the sofa, so check this carefully before you buy. The depth of the table is also important. Many are made in the style of console tables and will be no more than 18 inches wide. Rounded (sometimes known as demi-lune) sofa tables are charming in the right place, but the center width can prove to be a problem. If possible, plan to have a gap of at least 30 inches between your sofa table and the nearest piece of furniture. On no account should the table be wider or higher than the sofa.
- Function - if you aren't planning to put your sofa table against the wall with the sofa in front of it, can it serve an extra function? Many are set in the middle of the room with a sofa on one side, and open access to the other side. This is a great space for extra storage. Look for a table with drawers, shelves, and other amenities you can put to use.
