Sofa tables are indeed similar and date back to about the same time, the 1600s and 1700s. Originally they were used as an impromptu writing desk, being placed higher and behind a settee or sofa. While note writing fell out of fashion, at least while at the sofa, the sofa table continued to be a popular addition to homes, providing a convenient place for candles in the pre-electric light age and making the sofa look a little more attractive when it was set in the middle of a room as opposed to being against the wall.
For example, let's go with a romantic theme. You can start with a lace doily, runner or tablecloth for your sofa tables. If you want to go with a romantic turn of the century look, add a kerosene lamp to the table and perhaps an antique stereoscope with a few image cards placed under it. A couple old books in a stack can also be a nice touch.
Today, console and sofa tables are virtually interchangeable in the home, giving you more design options than ever. If you want to add a table in a hall, for example, you can go with a traditional console table, but you may want to look at sofa tables as well, especially if you're looking for a specific shape or style.
If you own your home, you're probably planning to stay there for a while, so you aren't as limited with your choices. The sofa will be the biggest purchase in your living room. Besides the wall colors, it will be the part that everything else will center around. In other words, you won't be getting a sofa that goes well with your accessories, but rather your accessories need to blend with your sofa and walls. The most common accessories for your living room are lighting fixtures, wall hangings and sofa tables.
Therefore decorating your home whether for the first time or just redesigning the house can now be a lot of fun with a wide range of furniture available and particularly for your living room. You might even find it hard to believe that it could be more fun when you design you home when on a budget. Although this would be a lot challenging to find the best piece of furniture to provide your room with the best look, there are still options available. The main or focal point of your living room is often occupied by the sofa set the lamp and the center or sofa table. Although there are some people who prefer using ceiling or hanging lights as opposed to using lamps you might still want to include a small lamp which serves just like an additional light fixture while adding some warmth to the atmosphere and to the furniture. This means that just a small lamp placed on a contemporary sofa table besides the sofa chair can provide a warm welcoming atmosphere for you and your guests. Moreover the guests would also automatically settle towards this chair. Therefore it can be an excellent place to design some luxuries and lavish room decor.
Each of the rooms in our home has a purpose. Although we spend a certain amount of time in each room, the rooms we spend the most time in are the living room or family room. The family or living room is often called the great room and we want it to look great. It's where we spend time kicking back as a family watching TV, reading, playing games or entertaining guests. When guests come into the great room, we want our styles and feelings to be reflected in our furnishings. Simply put, we want a room we can proudly display to our guests. We want this room to be a room where everyone feels comfortable and welcome.
Candles are always a great choice for this table. You can go with a couple of large candles or a single candelabra to draw the eye and anchor the space. Hurricane lamps work particularly well for this kind of table, as does a large spray of flowers. If you've noticed a theme here, it is to use something tall on the table so that it rises above the back of the sofa, dominating the space.
