Consoles are constructed out of many different materials including natural wood, stained or painted wood, metal, and glass. By far the most popular type is a wood console table with a decorative element like fluted legs, or a small amount of carving along the bottom edge of the rails. Most tables are made with four legs supporting the top, while some make an interesting design statement using two legs on the rear and one centrally located leg in the front. This three legged table is usually small in stance and design, and makes for a gorgeous addition to a more narrow hallway. Always check to see if the manufacture designed in a drawer for storage of car keys and the like. This hall table or console table with drawer make for a great addition.
Looking for a table in a store also allows you to get a better feel for the craftsmanship of the piece, so always remember to examine the table in person. It's never a good idea to purchase a table without seeing it and examining it closely.
Inlayed wood console tables ask to be shown off and bragged about, which won't be a problem as people will no doubt gawk and laud them when they see them. Generally when it comes to decorating, you won't put too much on top of an inlayed wood console table. You can still use the drawer and shelves underneath for storage, but you will probably want to keep the top clear, so people can see it's beauty. The exception may be a lamp you can place on the corner of the tabletop to illuminate the inlay.
There are appropriate console tables for every use. You just need to put enough time and effort in finding the best one for each case. A particular console table I have found to be very useful is a hallway console table. On such a table you can place anything you want and it can really make a difference for your "boring" hallway. You could place picture frames, a beautiful alarm clock or anything else you think would look good or make your life a little easier.
Many people look at these kinds of wood console tables as an heirloom piece for the family. They want the beauty of the craftsmanship to be passed on for years to come. In this case, while you could just settle for the design you have already chosen for the table, you could also take things one step further and have some of the metal inlay work engraved with a family name, date, or something else that will make it more meaningful to future generations.
Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to style is the fact that some tables are extremely trendy for a short period of time, while others have a very classic look that will stay in style for years to come. Just remember that console tables, especially those in the entryway of your home, are often the first piece of furniture visitors will notice. This means it is much better to purchase a classic-looking table rather than a trendy one that will be out of style in a year or two.
The location where console tables are placed is also vital to their decoration. Some of the places where you can place them include: foyers, hallways, living room, and dining room. Wherever you decide upon, select a vantage position to display your table.
