Sofa tables are a common piece of furniture in most living rooms as an accent piece. Sofa tables are not new to the world of home décor, having been around since the 1700s. Around this time the most common living room pieces, sofas and settees, were made with a high back. Most of the people's attention was called to the high backs, which were very decorative. As the furniture styles changed, the backs were lowered, leaving a lot of open space. To compensate for this empty space, furniture designers attempted to make adjustments.
First, decide on the focal point in your living room. Whether it's the TV, a piece of art, large glass windows, or any other item, you should put your sofa parallel to that focus piece.
Each of the rooms in our home has a purpose. Although we spend a certain amount of time in each room, the rooms we spend the most time in are the living room or family room. The family or living room is often called the great room and we want it to look great. It's where we spend time kicking back as a family watching TV, reading, playing games or entertaining guests. When guests come into the great room, we want our styles and feelings to be reflected in our furnishings. Simply put, we want a room we can proudly display to our guests. We want this room to be a room where everyone feels comfortable and welcome.
Style. One of the most important features of a sofa table is style. This is because the table must actually complement the back of the sofa. Many people forget to take into account the way the back of their sofa looks when they are shopping for a table to place along the back. Depending on what style you prefer, you may like a table that blends into the back of your sofa. If so, then look for a table that is roughly the same color as your sofa. If you prefer accents, then look for a table that will have a very dramatic effect when placed along the back of your sofa. Just make sure that you don't mix contemporary with traditional styles or modern with antique. Remember that the back of your couch is an important part of the display that will become part of your sofa table after it is in place.
Style. One thing many shoppers forget to think about when shopping for sofa tables is the fact that it should complement the back of the sofa. Most people do not spend much time looking at the back side of their sofas, but it is certainly recommended in the case of a sofa table, especially if the back of the couch actually backs into another space like a kitchen, dining room, or entryway. The style of the sofa tables you consider should match the style of the sofa, and if there are any wood accents on the sofa, it helps to try to match the color and style of the wood. The table should also not stick out apart from the rest of the room, so try to find one that meshes very well with the furniture you already have.
If you want to use the table behind a sofa, you can choose any number of console and sofa tables for the job. Typically, you want a table that is about two thirds to three quarters the length of the sofa or love seat and the top of the table shouldn't rise above the back of the lowest portion of the sofa.
That's one of the great things about console and sofa tables. They let you add a lot of personality to a room. While some people think they are still just good for candlesticks and a bowl of fruit, these tables let you express yourself, not only through the type of table you choose, but also what you choose to display on it.
