It's often the finishing touch in a living room, the sofa table. From ornate pieces that help define the theme of a space and finish the look of your sofa to simple tables that offer you a place to put lights and display treasures behind your sofa, the style of these furnishings run the gamut. While the style you choose will depend on your personal preferences, you should also consider some of the other traits to a sofa table before bringing one into your home.
Once used solely to back a sofa to soften its harsh lines a bit, the sofa table is a great choice for today's homeowners, largely because it adds additional table space without taking up a lot of room.
If you're unfamiliar with sofa tables, let's review them briefly. Created in the 18th century, sofa tables are a tall, thing and long table. They are about two-thirds the length of the sofa and the top comes up to the edge of the back of the sofa, and ideally, just a little bit lower.
Some people wonder if they can really put a sofa table into their living room, and it's not about the money. They think there isn't enough space in their living room because they have a small floor plan. This is actually a time when sofa tables shine. Since they are right up against the sofa they take up less space than using a coffee table would, since there does not have to be room to move around the table.
If you have your sofa up against the wall, consider pulling it out a bit and adding a sofa table between it and the wall. This can make your room feel a bit more spacious and you can use the table to display family photos, souvenirs, antiques or a spray of fresh of silk flowers.
Quality. As with all furniture, quality is always important. In most cases, a solid wood sofa table will be the best choice. However, some decors lend themselves to a metal table instead. Whichever style you prefer, just make sure that you look at the tables in a store. Always avoid purchasing a table over the internet unless you have seen the exact same style and brand in a store. The only way to truly test quality is to see the table in the store. This also goes for various brands. It is not uncommon for different manufacturers to make tables that resemble those made by well-known companies. Unfortunately, these copies are often not of as good quality as the originals, and then shoppers are taken unaware. Ultimately, if the brand name is one you trust, and you have seen the table in a store and taken the time to examine it carefully, then the table is most likely a good quality table. After all, companies don't become well-known for quality furniture by making junk.
