A sofa table is tall and thin, and typically used behind a sofa, hence the name. On average, they are 30-32 inches high, 14-18 inches deep and 48-55 inches long. This table type is most useful in a large room where the seating area is divided from the rest, and can be used in several configurations. The classic English country house interior centers around a seating area, usually around a fireplace; two sofas are placed facing each other and at right angles to the fire; behind each sofa is a sofa table. A coffee table, or large ottoman, sits between the sofas.
If you love entertaining guests but live in a small apartment, what do you do? You want to have a small dinner party but don't have the table space to seat them all. Do you give up your hopes of entertaining your friends until you can afford a larger home? You can rest assured that there are other options for you and your guests. First, your guests are going to be more concerned with spending time with you than they are the size of your home. Secondly, you do have options available to you. Sofa or console tables are the perfect option for your small home.
If you're unfamiliar with sofa tables, let's review them briefly. Created in the 18th century, sofa tables are a tall, thing and long table. They are about two-thirds the length of the sofa and the top comes up to the edge of the back of the sofa, and ideally, just a little bit lower.
Style. One of the most important features of a sofa table is style. This is because the table must actually complement the back of the sofa. Many people forget to take into account the way the back of their sofa looks when they are shopping for a table to place along the back. Depending on what style you prefer, you may like a table that blends into the back of your sofa. If so, then look for a table that is roughly the same color as your sofa. If you prefer accents, then look for a table that will have a very dramatic effect when placed along the back of your sofa. Just make sure that you don't mix contemporary with traditional styles or modern with antique. Remember that the back of your couch is an important part of the display that will become part of your sofa table after it is in place.
Measurements. Most people forget to measure before they buy furniture, and then they get the piece in their home and realize that it is either too big or too small. Measuring the back of the sofa is very important so that you do not buy a table that is too long or too short for the couch. Also remember to measure the height of the back of the sofa. Try to find a table that is just below the height of the back of the couch. This will make the table look like it certainly does belong there and might even be part of the sofa itself. It will also help a lot to measure how much width you can give to the sofa table. This will ensure that you do not buy one that will stick out too far into the walking space behind the couch.
These tables are available in many styles, colors and sizes. A very popular style is the ones with a fold-down leaf. When your guests are eating, you lift up the leaf to make more room. When the dinner is over, you fold down the leaf to allow more space in the room. Sofa or console tables are not only practical but also very beautiful in the dining room or living room. They've changed a lot in style, size and appearance for the modern home.
Console and sofa tables work particularly well in a long hall or at the top of a stairway. You can also use them at an entryway in place of an accent table. If you use them in the entryway or at the end of a hall, you may want to consider adding a mirror above the table so guests can check their hair, makeup and lipstick before heading out.
