During this time, the fireplace was both the focus and center of the room, so the sofa or settee was often located near the fireplace. The purpose of this was for both warmth and light. Sofa tables, at that time, were behind the sofa as they were narrow and long like the sofas and settees. They are still used this way today. Unlike most end or console tables that are used for storage or beverages, modern sofa tables are usually for decorative purposes.
Accent Tables. Sofa tables that are meant to be accent tables will work as a sort of opposing force to the back of the sofa. For example, a black or dark brown sofa might be accented with a gold or light oak sofa table. The effect is even more dramatic when pairing colors like red and black, black and white, or any other dramatic colors together.
A sofa table is meant to sit along the back of a sofa. Usually people who purchase a sofa table have their sofas backing up into another room, so instead of the back of a sofa, a table is the focal point of an open space. Most sofa tables are long and thin, and they may be in the shape of a long rectangle or have a half circle shape. Some tables have only shelves, while others have drawers, and still others have some combination of shelves and drawers.
Sofa tables began appearing around the seventeen hundreds, and like settees, they were known for their high features. Their popularity spread among all classes of people.
The height of the table is crucial as it should not be higher than the back of the sofa, so check this carefully before you buy. The depth of the table is also important. Many are made in the style of console tables and will be no more than 18 inches wide. Rounded (sometimes known as demi-lune) sofa tables are charming in the right place, but the center width can prove to be a problem. If possible, plan to have a gap of at least 30 inches between your sofa table and the nearest piece of furniture. On no account should the table be wider or higher than the sofa.
If you haven't used them before, traditional sofa tables are tables that are meant to fit right up behind the sofas in your home to offer another counter space.
The rising cost of homes and home ownership has caused many first time buyers to settle for a much smaller home if they're even able to purchase a home. In other situations, couples are forced to rent a small apartment or house until they can afford something larger. These small homes do not leave them much room for anything more than what's necessary in furniture. The development of sofa tables has made it possible for families to have stylish furniture while being able to make the most out of their living space. These tables are far from basic in design, but are available in many different designs and colors. Almost any interior design style you'll have in your home can be complemented with modern sofa tables.
