T-Mobile myTouch 3G vs. iPhone(s)
Ok, folks here’s a Reasoned Response to the new myTouch 3G vs. the iPhone. I know these have been done to death but well, suck it up.
- The myTouch DOES include the USB/3.5mm adapter (watch the unboxing video). It also includes a zippered case, a phone pouch, earbuds, charger, USB cable and a few other things I couldn’t catch in the video. http://www.androidcentral.com/t-mobile-mytouch-3g-gets-unboxed-video
- The iPhone only has 256mb of RAM, the myTouch sports 288mb of RAM 192MB of RAM.
- I don’t know how the iPhone stores its apps but the myTouch has 512mb of ROM (twice that of the G1 and twice that of any BlackBerry on the market right now and/or coming down the immediate pipeline).
- The processor on the myTouch is 528mhz (and a revision of the original processor in the G1 so hopefully its sporting some refinements) where as the iPhone 3GS is sporting a rumored 600+/-mhz processor (Apple still hasn’t officially anounce the specs) Sure, not all processors are created equal but its not like we’re talking 386 vs. Quad Core Duo here.
- The iPhone, 3G and 3GS still can’t multitask. Sorry, this is 2009, not 1983, this is an EPIC fail.
- Both have 3.2mp cameras with NO flash. I have a phone with flash, it’s really not that much use. It’s not powerful enough for anything at any distance and if you get up close and personal then it overexposes. This is on a BlackBerry 8900 Curve “II.”
- The myTouch features REMOVEABLE memory and battery, unlike the iPhone series.
Now, is the myTouch going to be as fast as the 3GS? We won’t know ’till someone runs a Magic or the myTouch head to head with it. I’m guessing it won’t be.
After all is said and done, however, the iPhone STILL CAN NOT MULTITASK. Of course the 3GS will be fast at any given app it’s running because it’s the only thing it’s running and it can only do one thing at a time. Playing a game and get a text? Oops. Said game shuts down to get the message, or alternatively, when you stop playing you suddenly get a flood of messages you would raher have known about 30 minutes ago.
As for the number of apps available in the respective markets, do you know anyone with 50,000 apps installed on their iPhone? No. Android’s market will explode once there is more than one phone to service through it and especially so when we get Android devices aross different carriers. It’s a developers dream to make ONE version of an app to sell/distribute across MULTIPLE carriers.
We are also comparing an App Store (Apple/iTunes) that has been out for three years versus one that has been out for 10 months (Android Market). Apples to Oranges, really. How many apps did iTunes have at 10 months?
Is the myTouch an iPhone killer? Show me the definition of an iPhone “killer” and we might be able to debate the issue. But really until the iPhone gets off AT&T exclusivity and it can run more than one app at a time it’s merely a status symbol. A cool one, but a status symbol none-the-less.
Lol wow, this is …not even really a review its merely a spec line up and the bashing of one phone. I’m looking into all smartphones atm, and I have to say dude, you seem really….really….really bias.
I would have to agree with the author. As someone who has owned an iphone since day 1 (3 of them actually), I can say that I am very happy with my new MyTouch. It’s ridiculously customizable (OS, I’m not putting pink skulls on the case) and delivers information well in a usable format. A perfect example of multitasking: I have an app that monitors my location by any combination of gps/cell/wifi and then sets my preferences base on location (i.e. rock n’ roll ringtones go away when I’m at a client’s office). The MyTouch is a solid device that works very well. The Android platform is surprisingly good, and I expect it to get much better. The coolest thing is the integration with Google Voice. The OS routes all calls through my GV number, and seamlessly accepts/sends GV sms [free]. Awesome! One note, Facebook is much better on the iphone.
I feel like the tie-breaker here….. I’ve owned neither an iPhone or a MyTouch – but have been thinking about getting one or the other – so I’ve spent A LOT of time researching and comparing the two. I have to give this site a Shout Out and huge KUDOS – by keeping it real, you’ve painted a clear picture of which phone would be best for me to finally upgrade to (trust me upgrade is badly needed – still using the Blackberry Pearl and I hate this thing – have actually thrown it across a room a couple of time). Considering everything I’ve read, and that I’m in the 95th percentile of people who probably won’t JB an iPhone – and considering I’m already with TMobile – I’m going with the MyTouch. And mostly because you all have convinced me. Thanks! Marking one To Do off my list now. LOL now watch me get it home and it not work – I do live in a rural area…. but so far TMobile hasn’t been THAT bad (she said with her fingers crossed) but in this area if you’re not with Verizon you suffer from tower availability anyhow. Just wish the MyTouch was available for the PAYG phones… getting sick of contracts and ‘hidden rules’.
LMFAO!!!! dude this wasnt a comprason! He just boasted about how much he thinks the iphone sucks!!!!! now read this very carefully cause obviously he doesnt know about JAILBREAKING & UNLOCKING A DAM IPHONE!!!! we all know apple is a bunch of goddang scammers robbing the hell outta everyone cause they making money i dont blame emm. but back on subject. i am a happy T-mobile customer since april of 2008 and i have had the G1 and i loved it it was a awsome phone and Android has great potenial!!!!! they will be bigger than the the app store for apple in all due time. now due to the fact that the G1 had some set backs i couldnt stand the fact that i could use a headset or play games and my music was a mess due to the fact all my music was on itunes JUST LIKE ALL OF US!!! dont lie……… you know it is. so i choose to try to get a iphone 2G and jailbreak it and unlock it to t-mobile. and yes i can have mutipule apps running, record video, transfer bluetooth files ,and all that other good stuff. BUT THE AVERAGE PERSON WOULDNT KNOW THIS CAUSE APPLE DOESNT WANT YOU TO KNOW. but i personally like the my touch its a cool phone runs smoothly and it is fast but still lacks a 3.5mm headset jack, flash on camera, and the abillty to close apps when not in use to have better performance. but theres a reason they made it like that and we dont know but only time will tell when they prefect that slight flaw and once its fixed then and only then will it be a TRUE IPHONE KILLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for making my points.
You talk about jailbreaking the iPhone but you don’t know about rooting the G1/myTouch? You don’t know about the multitude of 3rd party task managers for rooted and non-rooted Android devices, or the fact that the “manage applications” menu IS a task manager (fliter by running).?
You claim to have had a G1 and that Android is great but then you claim a rooted/jailbroken iPhone, 2G no less, is better? 2G is so slow it’s not even worth the time – even the G1 is 3G and has useable WiFi. Apples to oranges.
The article is stock phone vs. stock phone.
The stock iPhone can not multitask. Period. The average user (read 95% of all users) will not ever root/jailbreak a phone. They want to pick it up, buy it and use it.
You say that the average user won’t look into jailbreaking? I say, no! anyone who is smart would shop before they buy. Also, you talk about the iPhone as if it only had 50,000 apps, but you never considered that the iPhone actually has 3 apps stores. You can literally get ANYTHING imaginable. Impossible to beat there.
next: lets look at the hardware comparison. The iPhone hardware is supremely superior. it is impossible to compare these. look up the specs on apple.com
hmm, while I will agree this review isnt much of a review its more like a bashing of the iphone. i do agree with most that was said. all reviews are based on a out of the box phone, not a jail broke iphone or a rooted mytouch. i have a rooted mytouch. its insane! my brother has a jailbroke iphone, its also insane! we tried to have a “duel” of phones if you will, this is the results. camera. same~ now, hes using the 3g, not 3gs so his video camera isnt as good as the 3gs. but the mytouch vs the 3g vid camera. they both suck lol. it just is what it is. neather phone has that great of a camera vs phones that are basing there selling point on having a great camera. so ya. as far as apps, alot of truth in whats said here. the app store for andriod has only been around a year or so vs the app store for apple that has been around for i think like what, 3 years+? each phone has something the other doesnt. Iphone games TRUMP Andriod games, hands down. its not even a quesiton of wich phone can have better games. thats not the phones though, thats the dev that make the apps.
as far as animation goes, then is when you tilt your phone, move a picture ect. Iphone has better animations. it looks cleaner. this is cosmetic though. both phones run at around the same speed from app to app. apple just makes it look better. bottom line. this whole OMG WHAT PHONE IS better comes down to your carrier. ya you can unlock the iphone and use it on tmobile. but every time the Iphone gets updated, untill a new jailbreak comes out your phone is down for the count. or you can turn updates off and just deal with whatever bug there trying to fix. also, apple is going to catch on and kill jailbreak, there lossing tons of money in the app department from ppl getting apps for free from jailbreak. so expect apple and its all mighty progamers to stomp down some pain on the hackers of the iphone.
I have a mytouch, thats the phone i injoy! when and if the iphone gets out of its contract with ATT and comes to Tmobile will i consider getting one? or whatever new iphone is out at that time. only time will tell. as long as android phones keep fighting the good fight to be called some of the best phones out there. ill probobly stick with them. i like routing for the underdog =)
This is certainly a spec comparison, and then goes on to bash the iPhone. I bought a MyTouch, and have been very happy with it. It’s easy to use, and does pretty much everything an iPhone does.
Is this an “iPhone Killer”? Absolutely not. Why would people suddenly stop buying the iPhone and come to this? They are very similar, this phone is not way ahead of the iPhone. With that said, I know the iPhone cannot currently multitask, but that does not seem to be stopping people from buying it.
I think a perk of going with the MyTouch over the iPhone is money. Both phones cost the same, but the cost of the plans is much different. I stand to save close to $300/year going with the MyTouch. And with the phones being very similar, that is my reason for staying with T-Mobile and purchasing a MyTouch.
Yea I agree with your comment, after thinking about it, and was leaning towards the iphone, the mytouch got my attention and what almost swayed to mytouch but after realizing both of them can be jailbroken/rooted, it comes down to the plan. You can save money and with a trick with tmobile with the favorite 5, you can get unlimited mins vs the lowest plan for att is 450 and 5000 weekend/nights mins. But buying the iphone for 500 bucks without a plan and jail breaking it so it can be used for tmobile is still not enough savings to be worth it. In my mind, I still prefer iphone over mytouch.
I dont understand what makes you lean towards the iphone. It sounds as if you want an iphone just because its and iphone and are not considering the capabilities of the two phones.
The myTouch comes with 4GB of storage where the iPhone comes with 16 or 32GB.
Yes, but the myTouch has removeable storage and can handle up to 32GB. The iPhone you are stuck with what ever version you buy. Big difference.
whoopdy doo! lemme save money by getting a mytouch but go buy a 32 gb sd card for as much as 100 dollars. to get the same amount of memory your spending more money anyway.
good point
I have been using a JB iphone for over a year now with t mobile and i have to say this, Everything that the iphone lacks stock- bluetooth transfer, low volume, multitasking etc. and you try to add with cydia apps, ITS STILL BUGGY i cant count the times the ibluetooth has crashed my iphone and needed a complete restore! Volume boost tries it does but you cant make up for a good speaker when one isnt present, that goes for the ear speaker too cant hear quiet people especially tmobile customer care. I agree with the author it is a status symbol once you get past the pretty face of the iphone its just a buggy little let down. I cant wait to receive my mytouch!! I gave the iphone away, i need a little stability in my life lol!!
Hello well I’m a proud iPhone 3GS owner, its JB by the way, and it sounds to me like you just don’t like iPhones for some reason and you obviously don’t know its full capabilities, see when you JB an iPhone you have this little thing called SB (springboard) settings and in this little thing you can see how much memory you currently have free and also what apps are running, so say you’re on safari and you get a text you switch to texts and safari closes, but it doesnt actually stop running its kind of like switching windows, you check your SB settings and you can see that the apps that are running are safari, SMS and phone (which is always running otherwise you would have no service) so ya, the iPhone actually can multitask, and you can close apps that you dont want running in the background so that you can free up memory and your iPhone can perform faster. And what is with the name “myTouch 3G” well lets just mix the names of iPhone 3G and iTouch and dont forget to take out the i and add a my because you know we’re not trying to “steal” apples idea with the lower case letters before the uppercase letters, and WTF is this with Google, Oh I forgot that I can just get on my iPhone and go to Google.com or download the Google app, how convienient is that, and how could I forget that my iPhone comes with Google Maps installed on it…….hmmm…..sometimes things just slip my mind, NOT. And as for memory whose gonna fill up 32GB of memory on a phone, its not a portable hard drive get a laptop, your phone doesnt need to be a media center of every song, picture, or movie youve ever heard or seen in your life. So now lets review again………iPhone 3GS: Speed:WIN, Customization:WIN, Touch Screen:WIN, Internet browsing speed:WIN, Camera/Video Camera:WIN, Games:WIN, Apps:WIN, Overall:WIN, myTouch 3G: Overall:EPIC FAIL
and dont say “i dont know….” when youre reviewing something…..figure it out!!!!
also dont come at me with that BS saying this is stock phone vs. stock phone……no its phone vs phone with all the upgrades……..when you compare cars you compare all the upgrades
The only “iPhone Killer” will be made by Apple themselves, so until STFU and get an iPhone
mac geeks, they’re so hostile at times. MyTouch, a sane answer to a stupid idea.
LMAO what a f*ing moron. mytouch is way better then an iphone in my opinion. i had one and didnt like it. got the mytouch and loved it!!! lmao think before you right next time nerd
Im loving my mytouch 3g n thats all mater first of all iphone is ugly my opinion mytouch is soo smooth i play game browse talk N txt omg i lovingg my phone
Mytouch allll the way i typed this from my mytouch loving it
Who fuck uses phrases like Epic Fail?
lulz and over 9000 fag
iphone is just a fad
most people buy it because they are lazy and feel like throwing away money to AT&T, not to mention the people that sell their ipods to buy mp3 player phone combos (me) and most certainly stick with apple because honestly, iPods kick ass.
but anyways…
half the user base are spoiled high schoolers and middle schoolers that live in suburbs who ask for it for christmas cause john and mary got the newest one gen. last week.
that being said, half of these spoiled brats most certainly dont have the knowledge and need to jailbreak/unlock
i got a CECT i9 3g iphone clone (factory unlocked) and it worked perfect with 2 8gb SD cards on tmobile. it was basically a ghetto iphone but for 2 batteries, touch screen, and all the accessories for just 230$, i was pretty happy.
i may buy the mytouch but to charge so much without a contract… its rediculous. i can buy an iphone 3gs online new for 340, the my touch goes for what? 500? wtf? i’d buy FOR SURE if it had a keyboard like the droid. I WANT DROID FOR TMOBILE
Yeah …most people don’t jailbreak. Only people who live in the suburbs of Nerdville even know what that is.
well i have a mytouch and my dad has an iphone 3Gs and the mytouch is remarkably faster compared to my dads iphone with AT&T and its data package i also have the best data package offered by T-MOBILE.
MYtouch all the way i am very pleased with my phone cant get any better than that..fast and cute…
MYTOUCH all the way!!!
Iphone is the best phone. I don’t even have an iphone but I’m not an iphone hater. My touch is a great phone also but iphone is better no doubt. So iphone haters stfu.
Well I understand the authors bias beecause its pretty annoying that iphone is so popular and other company’s are still not able to make somthing after three and a half yrs on the market that beats it. I have the itouch. And I’m writing this off my mytouch, both are great devices that do practically the same things…. I’m just ready for a product that revolutionizes the market in the same way the iphone did when it first came out. And I would buy it regaurdless who made it.
I have the iphone now and am thinking of getting the mytouch. For one the data plan is about $30-$40 cheaper with the t-mobile plans. Also the Iphone unlike someone else said cannot multitask, with safari yes but with apps thats a negative. The only downside is I dont think the mytouch will be as good an mp3 player, because it wont sync directly with iTunes and the battery life on the iphone is amazing. Oh and i use my iPhone in my iHome that is really convenient, but i think its time for a change.
I dont use any of these above two phones, but thinking to get My Touch 3g. I hate any of the apple products… they suck…. anything that they make will be easily made by other companies with improved and more features. What is the point in getting first, the point is the product should provide more things to a consumer. I am definitely going with myTouch 3g.
I cant explain its functions its in short it is not cell phone but also a magic box. It will be my first smart phone or 3g or whatever you call it. . I m gonna have so much fun! . when i get it ill let know what i think of it. thanks T mobile
I’ve owned all 3 iPhones & I absolutly hate
missing all of my txt messages while running an app.
I got the myTouch 3G. & I love the notifications bar,
I prefer the Andriod Market over the Apple Market.
Most of Andriods apps are free & do basically the same things as iPhone.
iPhone is a trend, why be the same as everyone else when you can have a phone
that is 100% customizable to you.
Im on my third mytouch, drops calls, freezes up, no service where other tmobile phone have full conection, replaced sim card as suggested by tech support. Nothing seems to help, again this is the third mytouch they have sent me in about a month and now they want to send me the fourth, at what point do they admit the phone doesnt work? considering iphone been with tmobile since 2002 and have been happy until the mytouch.
Wow this R. John Klimut guy is such a dbag, IMO of course. I own a iPhone 3GS, I don’t care about multitasking. IMO, and everybody has one, a jailbroken iPhone is untouchable. The iPhone is just fun to use man, it makes others like the MyTouch look like crap. The author is just stating his opinion, a bit misguided though. The author said 95% of users will not jailbreak their iphone, where the hell did he get that number? So much BS man. You suck, good day.
WELL i HAVE A MYTOUCH AND i JUST LOVE iT…
i THiNK D iPHONE iS WACK N BORiN…
i THiNK AT&T iS WACK LiKE SERiOUSLY..!!
T-MOBiLE is D BEST..!! HAHA
there really isnt no dif in between the 2 phones just dif compines.
